Palestine: The Organ of the British Palestine Committee (Vol. II, No. 16; November 24, 1917): The British Palestine Committee seeks to Reset the Ancient Glories of the Jewish Nation in the Freedom of a new British Domini

Publisher: George H. Doran Company, NY, 1917
Near Fine with no dust jacket. First Printing. Soft Cover Publisher's stapled and printed wraps. The British Palestine Committee was founded in 1916 by Herbert Sidebotham, Harry Sacher, and others. The purpose of the society was to establish a "community of ideals and interests between Zionism and British policy" and it published the weekly Palestine. "The Zionist cause gained a valuable ally in the foundation in Manchester, in 1916, of the British Palestine Committee, which, early in 1917, commenced the issue of its weekly organ, Palestine. The British Palestine Committee presented the case for a Jewish Palestine from the British point of view. Its policy was 'to reset the ancient glories of the Jewish nation in the freedom of a new British dominion in Palestine.' It advocated a Jewish Palestine under British sovereignty, and it is a matter of historical interest that it was from the British Palestine Committee that the demand was first launched for a British mandate under the League of Nations for a Jewish Palestine. Indeed, this committee was one of the first, if not the first, to put forward the conception of the mandatory system in general, a conception which was promptly adopted by the Zionist leaders, who thus consistently associated the idea of a Jewish Palestine with the idea of the League of Nations. The British Palestine Committee early laid it down that any satisfactory solution of the Palestine question must embrace an integral Palestine, under a single sovereignty. Its slogan was 'neither partition nor condominium.' Every conceivable argument, political, economic, strategic, and moral, was brought to bear in Palestine, which became immediately a recognized authority with regard to all Palestinian questions. Without question the propaganda of the British Palestine Committee did much to convert public opinion to the idea of a Jewish Palestine." - Harry Sacher. The volume shows only the slightest shelf-wear, unmarked, tight, and clean. NEAR FINE. Palestine Series. Vol. 16. 12mo 7" - 7" tall. 26 pp

Religio Medici

Publisher: Limited Editions Club, Eugene, Oregon, 1939
Fine with no dust jacket. Limited Edition. 1. Hard Cover Limited to 1500 copies, signed by the designer John Henry Nash. Our copy is number 458. Quarter bound in tan linen over marbled boards, paper label on spine with black lettering. Religio Medici (The Religion of a Doctor) sets out Sir Thomas Browne's spiritual testament as well as being an early psychological self-portrait. In its day, the book was a European best-seller and brought its author fame and respect throughout the continent. It was published in 1643 by the newly-qualified physician after an unauthorized version of his writings on the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity had been distributed and reproduced with added text. Samuel Pepys in his diaries complained that the Religio was cried up to the whole world for its wit and learning, and its unorthodox views placed it swiftly upon the Papal Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1645. Although predominantly concerned with Christian faith, the Religio also meanders into digressions upon alchemy, hermetic philosophy, astrology, and physiognomy. Whilst discussing Biblical scripture the learned doctor reveals a penchant for esoteric learning, and confesses, for example, that "I have often admired the mystical way of Pythagoras and the secret magicke of numbers." . The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, tight, square and clean. Fine in a VG slipcase with light rubbing. . 4to 11" - 13" tall. 113 pp

31. Burnet, Gilbert
The History of the Reformation of the Church of England (Six Volumes, Complete, without Index)

Publisher: Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1829
Very Good with No dust jacket as issued. Fifth Edition. 1. Leather Full brown calf, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering and borders on burgundy labels in two compartments, floral gilt tooling in remainder, gilt and blind-stamped borders on covers, all edges red, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles. Gilbert Burnet (1643 1715) was a Scottish theologian and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury (Sarum). He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric, a preacher, and an academic, as well as a writer and historian. He was associated with the Whig party. In the mid-1670s, a French translation of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres (1585) appeared. Sanders attacked the English Reformation as a political act carried on by a corrupt king. Several of Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work, so in 1679 his first volume of The History of the Reformation of the Church of England was published. This covered the reign of Henry VIII; the second volume (1681) covered the reign of Elizabeth and the Elizabethan Religious Settlement; the third volume (1714) consisted of corrections and additional material.[1] His literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication. The Parliament of England voted thanks for Burnet after the publication of the first volume, and in 1680 the University of Oxford awarded Burnet the degree of Doctor of Divinity on the advice of William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury. For over a century this was the standard reference work in the field, although Catholics disputed some of its content. Thomas Babington Macaulay describes Burnet in relation to the king he served, William of Orange: "When the doctor took liberties, which was not seldom the case, his patron became more than usually cold and sullen, and sometimes uttered a short dry sarcasm which would have struck dumb any person of ordinary assurance. In spite of such occurrences, however, the amity between this singular pair continued, with some temporary interruptions, till it was dissolved by death. Indeed it was not easy to wound Burnet's feelings. His self-complacency, his animal spirits, and his want of tact, were such that, though he frequently gave offence, he never took it." - History of England, Vol. 2, Ch 7. Armorial bookplates of Walter Hamilton Moberly on feps, prize inscription, in Latin, on ffep of Volume One, otherwise unmarked, tight, square and clean. All six volumes of the text, but laking the seventh, Index, volume. VERY GOOD. 8vo 8" - 9" tall
